Real World Math

February 2, 2009

Math is all around us all the time. In this blog you will find numerous “real world math problems”. As you work them you will be asked to predict, explain and check your answer. I hope you have as much fun working them as I did making them up and picking them out for you. With permission, I used the Mike Lazar and David Hoerger Problem Solving Tool Kit book for several of these problems. Below you will find the first problem.

Shelly’s Birthday

Before working the problem, predict the answer. After working the problem please leave a comment with your answer and an explanation of how you worked it. I would like to know what information you needed to have before you could answer the question and where you found the information. I also want to see your worksheet where you set up your problem. You are allowed to use the calculator in the computer.

Shelly’s mom gave her permission to have a dozen kids (including herself) at her 11th birthday party. Shelly was in charge of buying the drinks. She wanted everyone to have the equivalent of two cans of coke. It was her job to figure out the best deal at HEB. At HEB she found a three liter bottle of coke for $1.75. The six packs of coke were one dollar and ninety-eight cents. She also found a case of coke cans for $8.50. Which choice would cost the least and how much would she have to buy?
